Help with gambling in Alberta

Help with gambling in Alberta is free and confidential, and it can be reached by phone, by text or online. It does not depend on where someone plays, on a casino floor or on a website.

Where to get help

  • Addiction Helpline (Recovery Alberta): 1-866-332-2322. The line is free, confidential and open 24/7, and it covers problem gambling.
  • 211 Alberta is free, confidential and 24/7: call 211, text INFO to 211, or use the 211 Alberta online chat for referrals to gambling support.
  • AGLC's Self-Exclusion Program is enrolled online only, at selfexclusion.ca, and covers Alberta casinos and racing entertainment centres, regulated online gaming, or both. Terms are six months, one, two or three years; it starts immediately and cannot be cancelled early.
  • GameSense is AGLC's responsible gambling program in Alberta. GameSense Advisors and an info centre are in each casino and racing entertainment centre.

Setting limits before a visit

A visit goes more smoothly when the limits are set at home, before the drive. Decide how much money is for the casino floor and how long to stay, and treat both as fixed. A hotel night and time on the floor are separate plans. Keep the room, dinner and gambling budget apart.

Breaks help too: step away from the machine or table, check the time, and stop once the set amount is gone. The legal gambling age in Alberta is 18. Staff must check valid government-issued photo ID for anyone who appears to be under 25.
